Bark Park

Is it any surprise that the #1 beach in America should have a dog park of the same caliber? So much so that Southern Living Magazine deemed it one of their favorite dog beaches in America.  Just south of St. Pete Beach lays the 1,136 acres of (mostly) undisturbed island that makes up Ft. Desoto Park- all for you and your K9 to explore. In addition, 32 oiled brown pelicans that had been rescued from the Louisiana gulf coast, were rehabilitated and released off Ft. Desoto’s Shores. More on that story here.

Climb the 100+ year old fort complete with two pairs of 12″ 1890 mortars ( the only remaining in the U.S.), cast off Ft. Desoto Fishing Pier, paddle through the mangroves with manatees or just kick back on some unspoilt beach.

Coast Still Clear?

Although the threat of oil washing ashore has become an imminent reality for those up in the panhandle of the state, our beaches along the Sun Coast are still free and clear of any signs of oil, infact most recent reports position the spill at around 222 miles off our shore.

According the St. Pete / Clearwater Visitor’s Bureau “to date there is no threat that would impact our area beaches in any way,” they go on to assure, “all of our accommodations, restaurants and attractions- as well as our 35 miles of award-winning beaches- remain 100% open for business.”

Independence Day Celebrations

When choosing you perfect 4th of July venue, there are many options to choose from, but the however is right on St. Pete Beach at Postcard Inn with front row seats to St. Pete Beach’s own fireworks extravaganza. Not only are the mortars fired practically right next door at Upham Beach, you can also have a clear view (weather permitting) of the shows from Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, Reddington and if you look over to east, St. Petersburg, which are fired from St. Pete Pier. Most of the shows start around 9p.m.

Breaking Records in Largo

Fourth of July, 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of “The Twist.” Shout out to Chubby Checker. And coincidentally the 50th anniversary of of Largo Recreation, Parks & Arts. So, in honor of this aligning of the stars, Largo will be attempting to break the Guiness World Record of the largest number of people doing “The Twist” in unison. Joey Dee and the Starliters of Peppermint Twist fame will be setting the soundtrack and the cost is $3 per participant. A small price for one helluva an honor. Breaking it down at 6pm at Largo Central Park (101 Central Park Drive).

July 5th Beach Clean-up

Beach clean-up sucks! And so does doing 100 push-ups or organizing your Tupperware cabinet, but it’s one of those things that’s gotta be done and the important part is how good you feel afterward. Following all the fireworks, fun and festivities, the beaches will be in desperate need of some TLC on July 5. Running from 9-11a.m., the clean-up will be from 104th Ave(Publix on Gulf Blvd) to 107th Ave (Bilmar Beach Resort on Gulf Blvd). Plan to meet on the beach at the public parking lot located at 10400 Gulf Blvd. (Across from Publix at Gulf Blvd. and 104th Street). Chipotle Mexican Grill will be dishing out free burrito bucks for participants.

Pizza for your health?

A very cool story from NY Daily News on a local pizzeria owner who set out to peddle his way from St. Petersburg to Times Square fueled by pizza along. More on his odyssey here.

Quite similar to WildWood’s own, “Big Lou” Elrose’s trek  from the New York City Restaraunt to the St. Pete Beach restaraunt on his pedaless bike- in true BBQ lover’s fashion. See pics from his trip.
