Long Live the Swigwam!

image001Buzz on the beach is that PCI is swallowing the Swigwam, razing the place to make way for some sterilized, dime-a-dozen beach bar. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, we’re giving the bar several long-overdue upgrades. PCI designer Tara Oxley will swap the carpeted underside of the bar for a corrugated galvanized steel surface, which is, if we do say so, pretty cool-looking and quite a bit more durable than the carpet. The top of the bar is also getting replaced, to Paperstone, an eco-friendly material. These are much needed tweaks: that Swigwam bar top is two Bud bottles shy of collapsing! Around the room, we’re adding 6 32″ TVs and new ceiling fans. The license plates are staying right where they are; and the dollar bills are being preserved in a frame and will be transported to the PCI lobby — an homage to Swigwam, if you will.

More importantly, as for the booze program it too is getting some love. Now, in addition to Bud Light on draft and Heineken and Cornona in the can, you’ll be able to get Cold Ass Beer, brewed especially for Wildwood, and Red Stripe, a beer that goes with sun and sand as good as any our beverage director Laura Maniec knows. Here’s more: we’re swapping out the generic brand tequila in the flavored margaritas for Milagro Resposado (100% agave) and Pina Coladas will now be made with Bacardi. (Your hangover will thank you.) We’re also introducing Frozen Tampa Tea, which is our own concoction of Bourbon, Peaches Tea and Lemon. And, for the wine drinkers in the crowd, we hope you don’t mind that we’re going to switch from Dixie cups to plastic stemless govino glasses. Oh, and lest you think we’re jacking prices, beer will set you back $3, frozen drinks $6.

Not buying it? Skeptics, you are cordially invited to come check out the new bar after October 15, 2009.

Check it: Changes coming to Travelodge, but the Swigwam lives on:

The Travelodge in St. Pete Beach will emerge from a remodeling with a new look, name and restaurant selection on Oct. 15, says B.R. Guest Restaurants, which manages the property for hotel magnate Barry Sternlicht’s Starwood Capital Group. The 196-room property at 6300 Gulf Blvd. will become the Postcard Inn on the Beach. The restaurant will be transformed into Wildwood BBQ and Burgers and the Swigwam, a tin-roof beach bar since the 1970s, will get a new menu as Bill’s Beach Bar and Burgers. “About all we’re doing to the Swigwam is cleaning it up, but the rest of the hotel is being completely redone,” said Stephen Hanson, B.R. Guest president. Both restaurants have siblings in Hanson’s collection of 16 eateries in New York City, Chicago and Las Vegas. Postcard Inn will be marketed as “affordable” lodging with rack rates of $99 off season, $189 peak season.

Press: PCI Named one of T+L’s 10 Hottest New Hotels

In Travel + Leisure’s October issue, T+L highlights the 10 stylish hotels they hope to stay next:

There’s a preppier party happening on Florida’s Redneck Riviera at the Postcard Inn on the Beach (doubles from $119) by Steve Hanson, the restaurateur behind Dos Caminos and Wildwood Barbeque, in St. Petersburg, Florida. No doubt Hanson’s laid-back joint—surfboards in the rooms, a photo booth in the lobby—will be the playground for the yachting crowd that descends on St. Pete each winter. I’m packing my Top-Siders now.

Design Comps: PCI’s Groovy Exterior Hallways

If you’ve been by the property in the last six months, you’ve noticed designer Tara Oxley’s mocked-up hallways. The final design of these won’t change much at all: horizontal stripes and photos (taken by local artists; more on this soon) line the breezeways, of which there are four, with vertical color blocks marking room doors. Have a look—and check out the unintentional before and after room numbers in the first image. Ah, Travel Lodge, we hardly knew ye.
